Shared Services and Structured Ownership in infrastructure industries.
Objective: Optimized use of FREE assets for delivery of FREE benefits.
Consider its subsidiary-affiliate Golden Western Forests (GWF).
Owns and manages carbon portfolio, the core value proposition of the Solution.
Participates in ownership, sometimes operation, of elements of the larger infrastructure system. For example, BNSF, a Berkshire Hathaway business, owns the High Line, from Keddie through the northern Feather River country, across the high country of the upper watersheds of the Sacramento and Klamath, part of the infrastructure that in earlier times supports, was built by and for, the forests industries.
In a mature configuration of mutual interest structured-ownership infrastructure businesses, GWF and BNSF cross-invest and cooperate. A mature and efficient network would incorporate as well power businesses (PSREC, NVEnergy, Liberty, PacifiCorp, PG&E and/or successors, Silicon Valley Power, SCE, etc.)
In the Northern Sierra Project's Beckwourth Solution, GWF cross invests into industrial facilities at the top (Richmond Hydrocarbon) and bottom of the system (Loyalton Cogen), and into the infrastructure business in between (railroads, pipelines, "boats" and facilities).
